ríva Frosty Ice Cream & Frozen Treat Maker – FAQs
Basics & Preparation
What can I make with the Frosty? You can create ice cream, sorbet, gelato, frozen yogurt, and soft-serve treats using milk, cream, yogurt, fruit purées, and similar bases.
How full should I fill the cup? Only fill ingredients to the MAX FILL line. Ingredients expand during freezing; overfilling can damage the mechanism or prevent the machine from processing correctly.
How long should I freeze the cup? Freeze your base for 12–24 hours, depending on your freezer temperature.
Why must the cup be frozen flat? The cup must be placed on a completely level surface. If the mixture freezes at an angle, the blade will hit the frozen base unevenly, which can dislodge the blade or damage the motor shaft.
What freezer temperature works best? Aim for between -12°C and -22°C.
- Too Cold? If the base is too hard, the machine may pause. You can add a tablespoon of liquid to the top to soften it slightly before processing.
- Freezer Type: We recommend an upright freezer for a level surface. If using a chest freezer, ensure the cup is sitting on a perfectly flat area and the temperature is not set too low.
Operation & Troubleshooting
Can I use ice cubes or solid frozen fruit? No. Do not use loose ice cubes, solid frozen chunks of fruit, or hard ingredients like whole nuts or hard candy in the initial mix. All base ingredients must be blended or mashed into a liquid/smooth state before freezing.
Why did my machine stop or show an error? This usually occurs if:
- The cup is overfilled.
- The ingredients are frozen at an angle (not level).
- The base is too hard/cold.
- The outer cup is not fully locked. You must hear a clear click when inserting the outer cup. It is secure only when it cannot be removed without pressing the release button.
The machine made a loud grinding sound and stopped—what happened? This usually means the blade has become dislodged because the frozen base was uneven or too hard.
- Fix: Stop the machine, ensure the shaft is up, and remove the cup. Clean the lid and blade, let the base soften or melt slightly, re-level it, and re-freeze.
Why isn't my treat creamy?
- Fat/Sugar Content: Recipes low in fat or sugar may turn out "powdery." Try a "Re-spin" or add a splash of liquid.
- Settling: Some ingredients (like protein powder) can settle at the bottom during freezing. Ensure you whisk thoroughly before freezing.
Care & Maintenance
Is the machine easy to clean? Yes. Wash all removable parts (cup, lid, and blade) in warm, soapy water.
- Pro Tip: Wipe the motor shaft clean after every use.
- Deep Clean: You can run a "clean cycle" by filling the cup with fresh water and a drop of soap, then selecting the Clean function.
- Warning: Never immerse the main motorized unit in water.
Power Requirements: To ensure stable performance, plug the unit directly into a wall outlet. Avoid using extension cords or multi-plugs, as this machine requires high initial power to process frozen blocks.
Summary: Pro-Tips to Avoid Damage
- Never exceed the MAX FILL line.
- Always freeze on a level surface.
- Always clean the blade and shaft after every use to prevent sugar/dairy buildup.
- Never process a "hump" of ice; if the top of the frozen base is domed, scrape it flat before processing.
Visual Checklist for Success
Before you press START, check these three things:
Level Surface: Is the frozen base flat like a skating rink? If it's tilted or has a "hump" in the middle, scrape it flat with a spoon.
No "Hard" Mix-ins: Are there whole nuts or frozen fruit chunks? These must be blended before freezing or added after the machine has finished its cycle.
Direct Power: Is the machine plugged into a wall socket? (Avoid extension leads).
TROUBLESHOOTING
|
Symptom |
Likely Cause |
Solution |
|
Machine won't start |
Outer cup not locked. |
Rotate the outer cup until you hear a loud click. The release button should engage. |
|
Loud grinding sound |
Blade has dislodged. |
Stop immediately. The base is likely not level or too hard. Scrape top flat and let soften for 5–10 mins. |
|
Blinking Error / Stops mid-cycle |
Motor is overloaded. |
Usually caused by overfilling or the base being too cold. Ensure ingredients are below the MAX FILL line. |
|
Texture is "powdery" or crumbly |
Base is too cold or low-fat. |
Use the RE-SPIN function. If still dry, add 1 tbsp of milk or cream and re-spin. |
|
Blade is stuck in the lid |
Food residue buildup. |
Always clean the blade and wipe the metal shaft with a damp cloth after every single use. |
|
Treat is liquid/soft |
Freezer not cold enough. |
Ensure your freezer is set between -12°C and -22°C. Do not process before at least 12 hours of freezing. |
